Can You Run an AC on Solar Power in India? The Honest Arithmetic

Last reviewed: 6 August 2026

Your neighbour put solar on the roof and still got a ₹4,000 summer bill. That is not a solar failure — it is an arithmetic failure, and it happens to almost everyone who buys panels before doing this calculation.

Running an air conditioner on solar power is a solved problem in India. Getting the sizing right is where people lose money. This guide works through the actual numbers, then explains why the type of solar setup you choose matters more than the number of panels on your roof.

Can you run an air conditioner on solar power in India?

Yes. A rooftop solar system can run a residential air conditioner in India, provided the system is sized for the AC's rated power consumption rather than its tonnage. Solar-powered air conditioning is a setup where rooftop photovoltaic panels supply some or all of the electricity an AC consumes, either directly or through the grid. The practical question is never whether it works — it is how many kilowatts of panel you need, and whether you want battery backup.

Two things decide the answer: how much power your AC actually draws, and which of the three solar configurations you install.

How much power does a 1.5 ton AC actually draw?

A 1.5 ton inverter split AC draws about 1,380 watts at its rated cooling condition — not the 1,500 watts that "1.5 ton" suggests, and not a figure you can work out from the star rating. Tonnage describes cooling output, not electricity input. The number you need is the rated power consumption printed on the manufacturer's technical specification sheet.

Rated figures for the Ecozen Smart AC range, from the manufacturer's 2026 specification sheet:

Capacity Cooling capacity Rated power consumption Minimum (throttled)
1 Ton 3,400 W 1,005 W 278 W
1.5 Ton 4,800 W 1,380 W 505 W
1.6 Ton 5,276 W 1,485 W 480 W
2 Ton 6,300 W 1,790 W 530 W

The gap between rated and minimum is the whole point of an inverter unit. Once the room reaches temperature the compressor throttles down — a 1.5 ton unit can hold a cooled room at closer to 505 W than 1,380 W. Your real daily average sits between the two, depending on room size, insulation, outdoor temperature and the temperature you set.

A caution about star ratings: you cannot divide cooling capacity by ISEER to get power draw. ISEER is a seasonal efficiency figure averaged across a whole temperature-and-load profile, not an instantaneous conversion factor. Doing that division understates real draw substantially. Always use the rated power consumption from the specification sheet.

So how many solar panels does that need?

Covering a 1.5 ton AC run 8 hours a day needs roughly 2.8 kWp of rooftop solar — about five to six modern panels. The arithmetic below uses the rated draw as a conservative ceiling and a common Indian planning assumption of roughly 4 kWh generated per kWp per day, averaged across the year.

Size it for your own usage

The defaults below are the worked example. Change them for your AC, your hours and your own electricity rate.

11.0
kWh per day
2.8
kWp of solar
5–6
panels at 540 W
₹ per month at your rate

Modelled estimate. It assumes the compressor runs at its rated draw for the whole period — deliberately conservative, because an inverter unit throttles well below that once the room is cool. Generation uses a planning figure of about 4 kWh per kWp per day averaged over the year; real output varies with location, season, shading and system losses. We do not assume an electricity rate — enter the one printed on your own bill. This sizes the AC alone, not your other appliances.

The same arithmetic, step by step — this is exactly what the calculator above is doing:

Step Calculation Result
Rated power draw (1.5 Ton) from specification sheet 1,380 W
Daily consumption at 8 hrs 1.38 kW × 8 hrs ≈ 11.0 kWh
Generation assumption ~4 kWh per kWp per day planning figure
Capacity needed 11.0 ÷ 4 ≈ 2.8 kWp
Panels at 540 W each 2,800 ÷ 540 5–6 panels

This is a modelled estimate, not a guarantee. It assumes the compressor runs at rated draw for the full 8 hours, which is deliberately conservative — an inverter unit throttling to 505 W for part of the day will need less. Treat 5–6 panels as an upper bound for one 1.5 ton AC and size down only after measuring real consumption.

Two further cautions. Generation is seasonal — a monsoon week can fall well below the annual average, which is exactly when a purely off-grid setup leaves you sweating. And this covers the AC alone. Your fridge, lights, pump and geyser are additional load, so most households size the whole system together rather than per-appliance.

On-grid, hybrid or off-grid: which one actually suits an AC household?

For most Indian homes running an AC, on-grid is the right default and hybrid is the upgrade worth paying for if your area has frequent cuts. Off-grid is rarely the correct choice for air conditioning because it forces you to buy enough battery to survive the worst generation day of the year.

Setup How it handles an AC Best for
On-grid Solar offsets consumption during daylight; the grid covers evenings and shortfalls. No batteries. Most homes. Lowest cost per unit offset.
Hybrid Solar plus battery. AC can run through outages; surplus still exported. Areas with frequent or long power cuts.
Off-grid No grid connection. Battery bank must cover the worst-case day. Genuinely remote sites only.

Whichever you choose, the AC has to tolerate it. The Ecozen Smart AC is built as a solar-compatible inverter unit that works with on-grid, hybrid and off-grid systems, and its 145V–290V operating range matters in exactly the conditions where rooftop solar is most common — semi-urban supply with real voltage swing.

Does PM Surya Ghar pay for any of this?

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana subsidises rooftop solar capacity for eligible residential consumers. It does not subsidise appliances. No government scheme pays for your air conditioner — but the panels that end up running it may qualify.

This distinction trips up a lot of buyers, and some sellers blur it deliberately. The scheme provides central financial assistance against installed rooftop capacity through empanelled vendors, with the amount tied to system size. Because slab amounts and eligibility rules are revised from time to time, check the current figures directly on the official PM Surya Ghar portal or the MNRE scheme guidelines rather than relying on any third-party figure, including ours.

What to check on the AC before you commit to solar

  • What is the rated power consumption? Not the tonnage, not the star rating. This is the number your entire solar sizing depends on, and it is on the specification sheet.
  • Is it an inverter unit? Fixed-speed compressors draw a hard startup surge that hybrid and off-grid systems have to be oversized to absorb, and they cannot throttle down once the room is cool.
  • What voltage range does it tolerate? Wide-range operation reduces the need for a separate stabiliser.
  • Can you see consumption? Without per-unit visibility you are guessing at whether your sizing was right. The Ecozen Smart AC reports energy use through the optional EcoSphere™ app.
  • What does the warranty actually cover, and for how long? Check which model year you are quoted — cover differs between them.

Frequently asked questions

Can solar run AC without a battery?
Yes, on an on-grid system. Solar offsets your daytime consumption and the grid supplies the rest. You only need batteries if you want the AC to keep running during a power cut.

Kitne solar panel chahiye for AC?
About five to six panels of 540 W for a single 1.5 ton AC run 8 hours a day, based on the arithmetic above. Add capacity for your other appliances.

How many units does a 1.5 ton AC consume?
At a rated draw of 1,380 W, roughly 1.4 units per hour at full load, falling towards 0.5 units per hour once an inverter compressor throttles down in a cooled room.

Can I run my AC on solar at night?
Only with a hybrid or off-grid system that has battery storage, or on an on-grid system where the grid supplies the evening load and your daytime export offsets it on the bill.

Is a 3-star AC good enough for solar?
What matters for sizing is the rated power consumption, not the star label. Lower rated draw means fewer panels. Compare that figure across the units you are considering.

Does PM Surya Ghar subsidy cover the AC?
No. The scheme covers eligible rooftop solar capacity, not appliances.

Will solar eliminate my electricity bill completely?
Not usually, and be sceptical of anyone who promises it. Solar offsets consumption. How much of your bill disappears depends on your system size, your usage pattern and your state's net-metering rules.
